WBU Celebrates Senior Day with 2-1 Victory Over Central Christian

PLAINVIEW, TX -- Wayland Baptist women's soccer returned to the win column Saturday afternoon, holding off Central Christian College (Kan.) for a 2–1 victory at home on Senior Day.

Before the match, the Pioneers honored their four seniors – Paula Cubillos, Darbi Corder, Ava Kent, and Andrea Gutierrez Melo – as well as graduate assistant coach Bianca Roman with a pregame ceremony, thanking them for all their contributions to the program.

The Pioneers (4–6, 2–3 SAC) jumped out to an early lead and controlled much of the match, outshooting the Tigers 15–5 and earning six corner kicks along the way.

Wayland wasted little time setting the tone. Just over two minutes into the match, Ashley Perez buried her team-leading fifth goal of the season off a crisp assist from Gabriella Chapa, giving the Pioneers an instant 1–0 advantage.

Despite constant offensive pressure — including nine first-half shots — Wayland couldn't add to its lead before halftime, as Central Christian goalkeeper Macy Clements turned away several quality chances to keep her team within reach.

The Pioneers doubled their lead early in the second half when junior Liliana Hernandez calmly converted a penalty kick in the 48th minute, notching her first collegiate goal and pushing Wayland ahead 2–0.

Central Christian (3–8-2, 1–4 SAC) cut the deficit in the 63rd minute on a goal from Kaye Harrison, but Wayland's back line, led by Cubillos, Talia Gisonni, and Gabriella Chapa, held firm the rest of the way. Goalkeeper Ava Kent made two key saves to preserve the win.

Perez led the Pioneers' attack with four shots on goal, while Aniyah Perez and Hernandez each added strong performances off the ball to keep the Central Christian defense under pressure.

With the victory, Wayland improves to 2–3 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.

The Pioneers will look to build on the momentum when they travel to Chickasha, Oklahoma for a match against Science & Arts on Saturday, October 18th. The match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 PM.
