Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Pioneers Fall on the Road to #20 USAO

CHICKASHA, Okla. -- Despite a hard-fought effort and a late second-half goal from Camila Zavala, the Wayland Baptist women's soccer team came up short Saturday afternoon, falling 5–1 to nationally-ranked University of Science and Arts (Okla.) at McLaughlin Field.

The Drovers (8–2–5, 3–0–3 SAC) came out strong offensively, building a 3–0 lead in the first half before adding two more after the break. Wayland Baptist (5–7, 2–4 SAC) found some rhythm in the final stretch, with Zavala putting the Pioneers on the board in the 77th minute with her second goal of the season.

USAO's Dagbjört Gudmundsdóttir proved to be a handful for the Pioneers' defense, recording a hat trick with three goals and one assist, including a quick strike less than six minutes into the match. Wayland keeper Ashley Lopez stayed busy throughout the afternoon, collecting six saves while facing 25 total shots, 11 of which were on target.

Wayland generated five shots of its own, including three on frame. Makayla Coronado, Celeste Landin, and Zavala each recorded shots on goal, testing USAO goalkeeper Ashlyn Lonberg, who finished with two saves. Zavala came off the bench to provide a spark in the attack, converting one of Wayland's best opportunities of the afternoon to deny the shutout.

The Pioneers were limited to one corner kick and committed 11 fouls in the contest. Defensively, Gabriella Chapa, Talia Gisonni, and Celeste Landin logged all 90 minutes on the back line, battling to contain a relentless USAO offense.

With the loss, Wayland drops to 5–7 overall and 2–4 in Sooner Athletic Conference play. The Pioneers will look to rebound in their next outing on Tuesday, October 21st when they host RV Oklahoma City at 4:00 PM at JV Hilliard Field.
