PLAINVIEW, TX -- Wayland Baptist used a dominant rushing attack and strong defense to earn a 33–20 win over Oklahoma Panhandle State on Saturday afternoon at Greg Sherwood Memorial Bulldog Stadium.
The Pioneers improved to 3–2 overall and 2–2 in Sooner Athletic Conference play, racking up 525 yards of total offense, including 385 on the ground.
Keamodre Horace led the way with 203 rushing yards and a touchdown, while
Damon Ford added 173 yards and a score. Quarterback
Khalon Davis went 13-of-22 for 140 yards and two touchdowns, connecting with
Maddox Plazek and
Jamari Jackson for scores.
Head Coach
Marcos Hinojos Sr. spoke about the dominance on the ground today behind his running back tandem, "I'm very happy with how Keamodre and Damon. They have been amazing all year."
Coach Hinojos also praised his offensive line and offensive staff for stepping up despite the adversities they've faced lately, "I am absolutely proud of our OL and offensive staff. Our OL has been devastated with injuries and sickness."
After falling behind 7–0 early, the Pioneers took control with a 16-point second quarter, highlighted by Horace's 14-yard TD run and Davis's 27-yard strike to Plazek.
Trent McLemore added two field goals, and Ford's 12-yard touchdown in the fourth helped seal the win.
Defensively,
Donovan Henry led with nine tackles, and
Tyrone Morgan came up with a key interception.
With the win, the Pioneers snapped a five-game losing streak to the Aggies.
The Pioneers will be on a bye next week before hosting Langston University on Saturday, October 18
th at Greg Sherwood Memorial Bulldog Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
"In the bye week we will spend half the time resting and recovering from 3 road trips and 5 very physical ball games. The other half of the week we will continue to work on taking care of the football and focus on big plays for & against," said Coach Hinojos when talking about the preparation that's ahead for the Pioneers.
