SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. -- Wayland Baptist's women's soccer team faced a tough challenge on the road Saturday afternoon, falling 5–0 to No. 10-ranked John Brown University at Alumni Field.
The nationally ranked Golden Eagles struck early, scoring less than a minute into the match, and added two more first-half goals to take a 3–0 lead into the break. John Brown tacked on two more in the second half to close out the match.
Despite the scoreline, goalkeeper
Ashley Lopez delivered a strong performance for Wayland, recording five saves against a relentless JBU attack that fired off 21 total shots, 10 of which were on target. The Pioneers managed to create some offensive pressure of their own, earning four corner kicks in the first half and putting one shot on goal by
Ashley Perez, which forced a save from John Brown's keeper.
Defenders
Gabriella Chapa,
Paula Cubillos, and
Celeste Landin each played a full 90 minutes, anchoring the back line against one of the top offensive teams in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
With the result, Wayland Baptist drops to 4–5 overall and 1–2 in SAC play, while John Brown improves to 5–2–3 and remains unbeaten in conference action.
The Pioneers will look to bounce back in their next outing on Tuesday, October 7
th when they return home to take on Southwestern Christian. The match is scheduled to begin at 1:45 PM at J.V. Hilliard Field.
