Pioneers Generate Multiple Scoring Threats, Fall to Southwestern Christian 2-0

PLAINVIEW, TX -- Wayland Baptist put together one of its most aggressive offensive performances of the season, but despite outshooting Southwestern Christian 13–9 and holding an 8–2 edge in corner kicks, the Pioneers came up empty in a 2–0 Sooner Athletic Conference setback Tuesday afternoon at home.

The Pioneers (4–6, 1–3 SAC) controlled much of the early action, pressuring the Eagles' defense with four corner kicks in the first 20 minutes. Junior defender Talia Gisonni and midfielder Aniyah Perez each came close to breaking through in the first half, but SCU goalkeeper Lorelai Puglisi kept the hosts off the board with three key saves.

After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, the Eagles (9–2–1, 2–2 SAC) found the net twice in a six-minute span. Monse Villacres scored in the 60th minute to break the deadlock, followed by a goal from Sofia Jimenez in the 66th minute, assisted by Abbigail Johnson.

Wayland continued to press forward in search of an answer. Perez, Camila Zavala, and Elaina Barrientes all generated second-half scoring chances, but Puglisi turned away every effort en route to a six-save shutout.

Goalkeeper Ashley Lopez anchored the WBU defense with three saves while facing a flurry of late attacks. Despite the loss, the Pioneers' back line—led by Gisonni, Gabriella Chapa, and Paula Cubillos—kept Southwestern Christian's offense limited for most of the match.

Wayland will look to bounce back on Saturday, October 11th when they host the Central Christian Tigers at 1:45 PM at JV Hilliard Field. The Pioneers will celebrate Senior Day before the start of the match.
