Pioneers Split Doubleheader at SCU Behind Strong Game 2 Start from Armstrong

Bethany, Okla. --- After inclement weather forced this series to start three days later than expected, the Pioneers earned a split in Monday's doubleheader against the Eagles of Southwestern Christian University. The Eagles won game one by a score of 6-5, but the Pioneers bounced back and won game two, 3-1.

GAME ONE

Wayland Baptist had a tough time getting the offense rolling early as they recorded just one hit over the first two innings, while Southwestern Christian rattled off five runs over the first two innings to take a commanding 5-0 lead. The Eagles would later score one more run in the bottom of the 4th to take a 6-0 lead over the Pioneers.

The Pioneers were held scoreless until the top of the 5th inning when Arianna Zubia drove in the first run with an RBI single to score Christian Moyers and make it 6-1, Eagles. Brooklyn Araujo got another run back for the Pioneers in the top of the 6th with an RBI double to make it 6-2.

Makayla Sanchez trimmed the Pioneer deficit to just 6-3 in the top of the 7th with an RBI single to score Moyers once again. Zubia then brought the Pioneers to within run one after she crushed a two-run bomb to left to make it 6-5, Eagles. The Pioneer comeback would ultimately stall after two straight flyout to end the game – giving the Eagles the 6-5 win over Wayland Baptist.

Zubia had a strong game one at the plate, finishing 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs. Araujo went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI. Moyers finished 2 for 3 with a double and two runs scored.

GAME TWO

Wayland Baptist opened the scoring early in game two as Makayla Sanchez made it 1-0 with an RBI double in the top of the 1st. After a few scoreless innings, the Pioneers struck again in the top of the 4th after Berkley Bradley slapped an RBI single to right to score Amber Poorbaugh to make it 2-0.

The Eagles got a run back in the bottom of the 4th with a sacrifice fly, but that would be their only run of the game as Adriana Armstrong kept the SCU offense at ease all game. The Pioneers scored one more run in the top of the 6th on a sacrifice bunt from Bradley that scored Christian Moyers to make it 3-1. Armstrong slammed the door in the 7th and the Pioneers secured the 3-1 win.
