Pioneers Split Four-Game Series at SCU to Open SAC Play

Bethany, Okla. --- The Pioneers were able to take down the Eagles in game one of today's doubleheader, 4-1, but Southwestern Christian worked the split by winning game two, 5-3. The Pioneers finished their first road weekend in Sooner Athletic Conference play 2-2.

GAME ONE

Wayland Baptist couldn't have asked for a better start at the dish to begin game one. Mikayla Carrillo led off the game with a solo bomb to center to make it 1-0. Arianna Zubia then singled up the middle, but Brooklyn Araujo would drive her in with a two-run shot to left – her 2nd home run this season – to make it 3-0, Pioneers.

The Pioneers would get one more run in the top of the 6th after Addy Rich dropped down a bunt single to score Christian Moyers from third to make it 4-0. The Eagles finally cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the 6th for one run, but Pioneer starting pitcher Amber Poorbaugh slammed the door in the bottom of the 7th to secure the 4-1 win for the Pioneers.

Poorbaugh was outstanding as the game one starter for Wayland Baptist – throwing a complete game (7.0 innings), only allowing one run, two hits, four walks, while striking out six Eagle hitters. Poorbaugh secured her first win of the season – making her 1-2 on the young campaign.

Araujo led the Pioneers by going 3 for 4 with a home run, a double, and two RBIs. Carrillo went 1 for 4 with a solo homer. Moyers finished 2 for 3 with two runs scored.

GAME TWO

Wayland Baptist opened the scoring in game two after Poorbaugh singled to right center to score Araujo from second and make it 1-0. The Eagles answered back in the bottom of the 1st with a run of their own – a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-1.

The Eagles delivered the big blow in the bottom of the 3rd by scoring three runs on two hits to take a 4-1 lead over the Pioneers. The Eagles scored one more run in the bottom of the 5th to extend their lead to 5-1, but the Pioneers wouldn't go down without a fight.

Berkley Bradley got a run back for the Pioneers in the top of the 6th with an RBI double to make it 5-2. Kailee Sanchez would make it 5-3 after driving in Poorbaugh with a sacrifice fly, but the Eagles would stifle the Pioneer offense and end the comeback. The Pioneers were unable to tie the game in the 7th and fell short, 5-3, to Southwestern Christian in game two.

Araujo went 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored. Poorbaugh finished 2 for 3 with two singles, an RBI, and a run scored. Bradley went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI.
