Plainview – Wayland Baptist battled 3
rd ranked Science & Arts (Okla.) in both contests this afternoon, but they were unable to steal a win from the Drovers in Thursday's doubleheader. The Pioneers lost 3-0 in game one then 4-2 in game two.
GAME ONE
Game one was a pitchers dual between the Pioneers and Drovers that was ultimately won by the Drovers, 3-0. The Drovers scored a run in each of the 3
rd, 5
th, and 7
th innings to secure the game one victory.
Wayland Baptist starting pitcher
Addy Rich was outstanding as the game one starter. She threw a complete 7.0 innings, allowing only one earned run, one walk, and four strikeouts.
The Pioneers could only manufacture one hit in game one – an
Amber Poorbaugh 7
th inning single that broke up the Drover no-hitter. Poorbaugh finished 1 for 3, while the rest of the lineup was able to work three walks.
GAME TWO
The Pioneers opened the scoring in game two after Poorbaugh drove a sacrifice fly to left to score
Arianna Zubia and make it 1-0 in the bottom of the 1
st. The Drovers answered back with two runs in the top of the 4
th to push ahead 2-1.
USAO scored one more run in the top of the 4
th on an RBI single and one more run in the top of the 5
th after an inside-the-park home run made it 4-2, USAO. The Pioneers got the tying run to the plate in each of the final three innings, but they were unable to scratch across anymore runs as the Drovers secured the 4-2 win in game two.
Adriana Armstrong got the start for the Pioneers in game two, and she gave the Pioneers a great chance to win the game with how she pitched. She threw 7.0 complete innings, allowed four runs (three earned), two walks, and two strikeouts.
Zubia finished 2 for 4 with two singles and a run scored. Araujo went 2 for 3 with two singles. Poorbaugh finished 1 for 2 with a double and a sacrifice fly.
