Pioneer Offense Goes Hot and Cold in Doubleheader Split at MACU

Oklahoma City, Okla. – A big offensive output in game one helps the Pioneers earn a split of Thursday's doubleheaders at Mid-America Christian to open this four-game series. The Pioneers earned an 8-5 win in game one, but the Evangels responded with a 9-1 victory in game two.

GAME ONE

Wayland Baptist jumped ahead of the Evangels early after Brooklyn Araujo drove an RBI double to right that gave Pioneers a 1-0 lead in the 1st.

The Evangels answered back with three runs in the bottom of the 2nd to take a two-run lead, but the Pioneer offense erupted in the top of the 3rd in a big way.

Addy Rich was able to reach base after an Evangel fielding error, which allowed Christian Moyers to scramble home and score to make it 3-2, MACU. Amber Poorbaugh followed that with a two-run double that put the Pioneers ahead, 4-3. The big inning was capped off by a Berkley Bradley RBI single that extended the Pioneers advantage to 5-3.

The offense wasn't finished for Wayland Baptist as Mikayla Carrillo added another run in the top of the 4th with an RBI single to make it 6-3, WBU. Araujo added another RBI to her stat line after smoking a single to left to push the Pioneers ahead 7-3.

Mikenzi Carlo added one more insurance run for the Pioneers in the top of the 7th with a sacrifice fly that made it 8-3.

The Evangels wouldn't go down without a fight and scored two runs in the bottom of the 7th, but Erin Trevino slammed the door on MACU and secured the 8-5 game one victory for the Pioneers.

Araujo led the Pioneers offensively by going 2 for 2 with a double, two RBIs, two walks, and a run scored. Carrillo finished 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Poorbaugh went 1 for 3 with a double, a hit by pitch, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Bradley went 1 for 2 with an RBI and a walk.

GAME TWO

After neither team was able to scratch across any runs over the first two innings of play, Wayland Baptist finally opened the scoring in the top of the 3rd after Rich slapped a single to right to make it 1-0.
