Â
Polanco did more damage at the dish in the bottom of the 6
th with the bases loaded by ripping a two-run single to left that made it 6-0, WBU. Two batters later,
Arcadio Frausto made it 7-0 after slapping an RBI single to right that scored Claudio from third. Pimentel was then plunked with a pitch that allowed Polanco to cross home and make it 8-0.
Â
Brayden Peyton continued the big inning with a sacrifice fly to center that gave the Pioneers a commanding 9-0 lead. The huge 6
th inning for the Pioneers was capped off by Frausto scurrying home on a Stars wild pitch that made it an overwhelming 10-0.
Â
Oklahoma City avoided the seven-inning run-rule by scoring their first run of the game in the top of the 7
th, but the Pioneers ended the opener in the bottom of the 7
th after Frausto drove an RBI single to left to secure the 11-1 win for Wayland Baptist.
Â
Polanco finished the opener 3 for 5 with a double, three RBIs, and two runs scored. Frausto went 2 for 3 with two RBIs, a walk, a hit by pitch, and a run scored. Claudio finished 2 for 3 with an RBI, a walk, and two runs scored. Pimentel finished with a sacrifice fly, a hit by pitch, and two RBIs.
Â
Even with the offense putting up the performance it did this morning, the story of this one was the stellar performance from Pioneer starting pitcher
Tyson Potts.
Â
Potts finished with 7.0 innings pitched, allowing one run, two hits, no walks, while striking out 11 Stars batters. Potts even carried a perfect game into the top of the 7
th before a lead-off single put a dagger into those hopes. Nonetheless, Potts did a terrific job stifling the Stars hitters and preserving the Pioneer bullpen for the remainder of the Tournament.
