Pioneers Open 2025 Season with Dominant 4-1 Victory Over McMurry

PLAINVIEW, Texas -- Wayland Baptist Men's Soccer opened the 2025 season in impressive fashion, defeating McMurry University 4-1 on Saturday afternoon at home.

The Pioneers controlled the match from the opening whistle, out-shooting McMurry 21-16 and putting 15 shots on goal. Freshman Alfonso Hinojosa got the scoring started in the 30th minute, finding the back of the net to give WBU a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

Wayland struck again early in the second half when Renato Katrip converted from close range in the 51st minute to make it 2-0. McMurry responded with a goal in the 61st minute, but the Pioneers never looked back.

Senior Francis Motsi took over late, scoring twice in a five-minute span to seal the win. Motsi's first goal came in the 79th minute, followed by another in the 84th minute off an assist from Maximiliano Campos, securing his brace and WBU's first win of the season.

Goalkeeper Alex Neri anchored the defense with four saves in 85 minutes of play, while the Pioneers limited McMurry to just one goal despite a late push.

Wayland Baptist improves to 1-0 on the season and will now turn its attention to the road, as the Pioneers face Paul Quinn College on Thursday, August 28 at 7:30 p.m. in Dallas.
