Pioneers Fall to OPSU in Four Sets

Box Score PLAINVIEW, TX -- Wayland Baptist put together a strong start but couldn't sustain the momentum, falling to Oklahoma Panhandle State, 3–1 (25-22, 22-25, 21-25, 15-25), Tuesday evening inside the Hutcherson Center.

The Pioneers (4-5, 3-2 SAC) came out sharp in the opening set, hitting .179 and sideing out at an impressive 81 percent clip. Behind aggressive swings from Carlee Heidebrecht and Fade Ogunbade, WBU edged the Aggies, 25-22, to grab the early advantage.

But OPSU (5-7, 3-2 SAC) responded in set two, capitalizing on Pioneer errors to even the match. From there, the Aggies' offensive efficiency steadily climbed while WBU's attack dipped, as the Pioneers hit just .125 in the third and .043 in the fourth.

Despite the loss, WBU had bright spots across the board.
  • Heidebrecht finished with 9 kills, hitting .070 on 43 swings while also recording four blocks and 17 digs for a double-double effort.
  • Ogunbade was strong at the net with 11 kills at a .162 clip to go along with five blocks.
  • Lilou Bressand provided balance with 8 kills, 16 digs, and a team-high 39 receptions.
  • Martyna Lewinska distributed the offense with 35 assists.
Defensively, the Pioneers totaled 92 digs and controlled the net with 8.0 team blocks, highlighted by the frontline play of Heidebrecht and Ogunbade.

The Pioneers will look to regroup and build on the positives heading into their next matchup. Wayland Baptist returns to action on Friday, September 19, when they travel to face Central Christian College (Kan.) in another Sooner Athletic Conference battle.
