Record-Breaking Day for WBU Football in 73-47 Victory Over Texas College

PLAINVIEW, TX -- The Wayland Baptist football team delivered a performance for the history books on Saturday afternoon, shattering the program record for points in a single game and tying the mark for touchdowns in a contest during a 73-47 win over Texas College at Greg Sherwood Memorial Bulldog Stadium.

The Pioneers (2-2, 1-2 SAC) lit up the scoreboard from the opening kickoff, piling on 73 points—the most ever in school history—while finding the end zone 10 times, tying the single-game touchdown record.

Wayland struck first when senior Maddox Plazek powered in from two yards out, and just a minute later, defensive back Donovan Henry made a statement with a 59-yard interception return for a touchdown. The Pioneers kept the momentum rolling with rushing scores from Damon Ford and a 66-yard kickoff return to the house by Marques Hall, giving Wayland 28 points in a wild opening quarter.

From there, the Pioneers' offense and special teams turned the game into a showcase of speed and explosive playmaking. Quarterback Khalon Davis threw for 271 yards and three touchdowns, including strikes to Hall, Donte Hurt, and Keamodre Horace. Horace proved unstoppable all afternoon, piling up 132 yards on just 10 carries with three rushing touchdowns—including electrifying runs of 57 and 30 yards—along with a 60-yard touchdown catch.

On defense, Wayland forced four interceptions, with Henry, Braylon Phelps, and Tyrone Morgan (two) each making big plays to halt Texas College's passing attack. Henry's early pick-six set the tone, while Morgan's two interceptions in the fourth quarter sealed the record-setting win.

Special teams also played a pivotal role, highlighted by Hall's 66-yard kickoff return for a score. Kicker Trent McLemore was perfect on the day, connecting on all 10 extra points and adding a 25-yard field goal.

"Ques knew our team needed a boost and he took the opportunity and made things happen," said Head Coach Marcos Hinojos Sr. talking about Marques Hall's performance today.

Despite Texas College (0-5, 0-4 SAC) finding success through the air with five passing touchdowns, Wayland's relentless offense proved too much to overcome. The Pioneers racked up 462 total yards, with 191 coming on the ground behind a dominant offensive line.

When the final whistle blew, Wayland walked away with a 73-47 victory, etching its name into the record books and giving fans a performance they won't soon forget.

Coach Hinojos continued, "I'm so proud of our team. Breaking the scoring record is a direct result of team play. All three phases contributed to that record being broken. Our staff has worked tirelessly to grow so many new Wayland players, so that they can contribute."

"Our offense was very balanced today, while our defense was so good for three quarters. We had a tough 2nd quarter, but our kids kept player hard."

The Pioneers will look to carry their offensive momentum into next weekend as they return to conference play.
