Pioneers Power Past USW for 4-2 Win Before Lightning Halts Play

PLAINVIEW, Tex. -- Wayland Baptist stormed out to an early lead and never looked back, defeating the University of the Southwest, 4-2, Wednesday night at Hilliard Field. The match was officially called in the 78th minute due to lightning in the area.

The Pioneers (2-1) wasted no time asserting themselves offensively, putting four goals on the board in a fast-paced first half. Joao Valmorbida opened the scoring in the 16th minute off an assist from a corner kick by Alvaro Pineda. After the Mustangs equalized minutes later, Wayland quickly regained control.

Francis Motsi slotted home his third goal of the young season in the 25th minute, set up by Jamol Williams. The Mustangs again responded to tie the match at 2-2, but Williams, who was dynamic throughout the half, netted back-to-back goals in the 28th and 37th minutes. He now has three on the season.

Motsi, who added an assist to his goal, finished with a team-high six shots, while Williams was clinical in front of goal, scoring twice on three shots. Jacob Landles and Williams each provided assists in the opening half as the Pioneers' attack overwhelmed the Mustang defense.

The Pioneers now turn their attention to their next test at home, when they host Ecclesia College on Saturday, September 6th, in Plainview. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
