PLAINVIEW, TX -- Wayland Baptist women's soccer went toe-to-toe with Sooner Athletic Conference foe
RV Mid-America Christian on Tuesday afternoon, but two late goals proved costly as the Pioneers fell, 2–0, at home.
The match was a defensive battle for much of the afternoon, with both teams creating chances but neither able to break through in the opening 77 minutes. Wayland matched MACU shot-for-shot, finishing with 10 attempts apiece, while holding a 5–3 advantage in corner kicks.
Goalkeeper
Ashley Lopez anchored the Pioneer defense, turning away five shots and keeping the game scoreless until the 79th minute, when MACU's Liv Houlston put the visitors ahead. The Evangels added another in the 86th minute to seal the result.
Offensively, Wayland generated quality opportunities throughout the match.
Aniyah Perez and
Ashley Perez each recorded multiple shots on goal, while
Talia Gisonni,
Camila Zavala, and
Elaina Barrientes also tested MACU's keeper. Despite six shots on frame, the Pioneers couldn't find the back of the net.
With the result, Wayland moves to 4–4 overall and 1–1 in SAC play, while MACU improves to 6–2–1, 1–0–1.
The Pioneers will now face their toughest test of the season, a road-trip to Siloam Springs, Arkansas for a showdown with #3 John Brown. Kick-off is scheduled for 2:30 PM.
