PLAINVIEW --- The Wayland Baptist Flying Queens delivered a dominant performance Saturday afternoon, pulling away in the second half to secure a 71–49 win over Oklahoma City University at the Hutcherson Center in Plainview.
Wayland (7-9, 6-5) led by just two at halftime, but the Flying Queens took control after the break with a decisive third-quarter surge. Wayland outscored OCU 20–6 in the third period, using efficient offense and stifling defense to create separation that the Stars could not overcome.
Cania Mitchell paced the Flying Queens with a game-high 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting, adding five assists and four rebounds.
Peyton North followed with 13 points, highlighted by a key three-pointer in the fourth quarter, while
Ksenija Djokic provided an efficient spark with 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting in just 19 minutes.
Zalika Stevens also made her presence felt off the bench, recording 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
Wayland's balanced attack was complemented by strong work on the glass, as the Flying Queens held a 38–21 rebounding advantage and scored 50 points in the paint. The home team shot 48.4 percent from the floor and an impressive 9-of-10 from the free throw line, capitalizing on opportunities throughout the game.
Defensively, Wayland forced Oklahoma City into a difficult third quarter, limiting the Stars to just two made field goals in the period. The Flying Queens also turned defense into offense, scoring 16 points off turnovers and steadily extending the lead into the fourth quarter, where they pushed the advantage to as many as 25 points.
The Flying Queens will look to continue their strong stretch of basketball on Monday, January 19
th, when they host the Aggies of Oklahoma Panhandle State University for another Sooner Athletic Conference match up. The game is scheduled to begin at 6:00 PM in the Hutcherson Center.
