BETHANY, Okla. – Wayland Baptist Women's Soccer delivered an impressive offensive performance Saturday afternoon, defeating Southwestern Christian University 6-0 in Sooner Athletic Conference play. The Pioneers wasted little time establishing control, scoring three goals in the opening 23 minutes before adding three more in the second half to secure the shutout victory.
With the win, Wayland improves to 7-4-1 overall and 4-1 in SAC play, while Southwestern Christian falls to 6-4-2 overall and 0-4-1 in conference action.
The Pioneers came out aggressive offensively, creating scoring opportunities early in the first half. Wayland broke through in the 16th minute when Tannia Diaz converted a penalty kick at the 15:05 mark to give the Pioneers a 1-0 advantage.
Just over two minutes later, Diaz struck again, finding the back of the net in the 18th minute off an assist from Narriah Gomez to double Wayland's lead.
The offensive momentum continued in the 23rd minute when Camila Zavala scored an unassisted goal at the 22:28 mark, extending the Pioneers' advantage to 3-0 heading into halftime.
Wayland picked up right where it left off in the second half, quickly adding to its lead. In the 49th minute, Zavala converted the Pioneers' second penalty kick of the afternoon, recording her second goal of the match and pushing the score to 4-0.
Lilly Gansauge joined the scoring effort in the 56th minute, finishing an opportunity created by Alexia Fregoso to give Wayland a commanding five-goal advantage.
Gansauge capped off the afternoon's scoring in the 68th minute, netting her second goal of the match to secure the 6-0 victory.
The Pioneers showcased a balanced offensive attack, with Diaz, Zavala, and Gansauge each recording two goals. Gomez and Fregoso contributed one assist apiece.
Despite being outshot 20-13 overall, Wayland made the most of its attacking opportunities, placing nine shots on goal and converting six of them. Gansauge led the Pioneers with four shots, including three on target, while Diaz and Zavala each registered three attempts.
Defensively, goalkeeper Ashley Lopez delivered an outstanding performance between the posts, recording 11 saves across 90 minutes to preserve the clean sheet. Lopez and the Pioneer defense held Southwestern Christian scoreless despite facing 20 shots, including 11 on goal.
Following the victory, Wayland Head Coach Alex Castaneda praised his team's performance and ability to capitalize on scoring opportunities.
"A great team performance today. We were clinical in front of goal, created good attacking moments, and did a great job of controlling the game. A 6-0 result is a credit to the work the players are putting in, and we'll look to build on this performance moving forward," Castaneda said.
The victory marks another important conference result for the Pioneers as they continue building momentum in the SAC standings.
