McPHERSON, Kan. — Wayland Baptist women's soccer delivered an overwhelming offensive performance Saturday afternoon, defeating Central Christian College 13-0 at Grant Sports Complex. The victory improved the Pioneers to 5-4-1 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
Wayland took control almost immediately and never looked back, scoring 10 goals in the opening half before adding three more after the break. The Pioneers finished the afternoon with 41 shots, including 20 on goal, while limiting Central Christian to just three total shots and none on target. Wayland also held a commanding 14-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Tannia Diaz opened the scoring just 1:35 into the match off an assist from Erin Carr before finding the net again only 37 seconds later. Narriah Gomez followed with two goals of her own, while Camila Zavala added another to give Wayland a 5-0 advantage less than 10 minutes into the contest.
The Pioneers continued to apply pressure throughout the first half. Nerea Garcia scored twice, while Jillanda Sandy, Carr and Alexia Fregoso each found the back of the net as Wayland carried a 10-0 advantage into halftime.
Wayland remained in control throughout the second half before adding three late goals. Zavala scored her second of the afternoon in the 80th minute, Eduarda Martins followed in the 84th minute, and Cecilia Lopez converted a penalty kick in the 86th minute to complete the 13-0 victory.
Diaz, Gomez, Zavala and Garcia each finished with two goals for the Pioneers. Martins, Lopez, Carr, Fregoso and Sandy each added one. Wayland also received assists from Carr, Zavala, Lilly Gansauge, Aniyah Perez and Alyssa Bovis.
Goalkeeper Maria Tomas played all 90 minutes as the Pioneers recorded the shutout. Wayland's defense did not allow Central Christian to put a shot on goal during the match.
Head Coach Alex Castaneda praised his team's ability to stay disciplined despite taking control early.
"I thought we handled the game very well from start to finish," Castaneda said. "We were disciplined, controlled the tempo, and did a good job of taking advantage of the opportunities that were in front of us. Credit to our players for staying focused and maintaining our standards throughout the match. We know we'll face tougher challenges ahead, but this was a good team performance and another step in the right direction."
