PLAINVIEW --- Wayland Baptist wrapped up a strong day at home on Sunday with a thrilling doubleheader sweep over Adams State, taking Game 1 in walk-off fashion, 9–8, and following it up with a 6–5 victory in Game 2 to improve their record to 11–5 on the season. With the two wins, the Pioneers secured the four-game sweep of the Grizzlies to open their 2026 home schedule.
In the opener, the Pioneers showed resilience and late-game poise, rallying in the bottom of the ninth to secure a dramatic comeback win, 9–8, at Wilder Field.
Game 1: Wayland Baptist 9, Adams State 8 (9 innings)
Wayland Baptist faced early adversity after Adams State plated three runs in the third inning and added three more in the fourth to take a 6–2 lead. Despite the deficit, the Pioneers never wavered and steadily worked their way back into the contest.
Raphael Beltre provided a major spark in the bottom of the sixth, launching a three-run home run to left-center field that tied the game at 6–6. His second homer of the day energized the dugout and brought the home crowd to its feet.
After Adams State regained the lead with two runs in the top of the ninth, Wayland entered the final frame trailing 8–6.
Ben Kasparie and
Cesar Ibarra worked key at-bats to reach base, setting the stage for the rally.
Adonis Bernal delivered an RBI single to cut the deficit to one, and moments later,
Christian Toledo drilled a two-run double into the left-center gap, scoring the tying and winning runs to complete the walk-off victory.
Bernal finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs, while Toledo drove in two and delivered the decisive hit. Beltre led the offense with four RBIs on two home runs.
On the mound, the Pioneers used a committee approach.
Austin Cole earned the win after closing out the top of the ninth, helping set up the late-game heroics.
Game 2: Wayland Baptist 6, Adams State 5
The nightcap followed a similar script, as Wayland Baptist once again leaned on timely hitting and clutch pitching to edge out Adams State, 6–5.
The Pioneers wasted no time jumping on the scoreboard in the first inning. After Bernal reached base,
Sinclair Pimentel drove in the first run, and Beltre followed with an RBI single to give Wayland an early 3–1 advantage.
Adams State responded over the middle innings and eventually built a 5–3 lead by the fifth. Wayland answered in the sixth, sparked once again by Beltre, who crushed a solo home run to bring the Pioneers within one. Later in the inning, Toledo worked a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at 5–5.
With the momentum shifting, Wayland turned to its bullpen to keep the game within reach.
Collin Arnold delivered two scoreless innings in relief, allowing the offense time to mount one more push.
In the bottom of the seventh,
Arcadio Martinez delivered the decisive blow, blasting a walk-off home run to left-center field to seal the 6–5 victory and complete the sweep.
Beltre went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs in Game 2, while Pimentel and Martinez also drove in key runs. Toledo picked up the win on the mound after recording the final out in the seventh.

The Pioneers will now open Sooner Athletic Conference play on Friday, February 20
th, with a home doubleheader against the Lions of Nelson University. Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 2:00 PM at Wilder Field.
