Queens Season Ends in SAC Quarterfinals Following 59-49 Loss to 2-Seed MACU

OKLAHOMA CITY --- Wayland Baptist's season came to a close Thursday night in Oklahoma City as the Flying Queens fell 59-49 in SAC Athletic Solutions Women's Basketball Quarterfinals to 2-seed Mid-America Christian.

The loss concludes the 2025-26 campaign for Wayland Baptist at 12-16 overall, bringing an end to a season in which the Queens battled through adversity and earned their place in postseason play.

Wayland came out with poise and confidence, putting together a dominant first quarter. The Flying Queens shot 7-of-16 (43.8 percent) from the floor in the opening period, including 3-of-8 from three-point range, to build a 20-7 advantage.

The defensive effort was equally strong, holding the opposition to just seven points in the first 10 minutes.

Offensively, however, the Queens struggled to maintain that rhythm over the final three quarters. Wayland scored nine points in the second quarter, 11 in the third, and nine in the fourth.

For the game, the Queens finished 17-of-54 (31.5 percent) from the field and 5-of-23 (21.7 percent) from beyond the arc. Wayland also went 10-of-15 (66.7 percent) from the free-throw line.

Cania Mitchell led the Flying Queens with 11 points while adding nine rebounds and five assists in 35 minutes. Brooklyn Birkenfeld recorded a double-double with nine points and a team-high 10 rebounds, while also contributing two assists and two steals.

Zalika Stevens provided a strong presence inside with eight points and nine rebounds, while Jadyn Trusler added eight points, knocking down two three-pointers and finishing a perfect 2-of-2 from the free-throw line. Iliana Hernandez contributed six points on two made three-pointers, and Peyton North chipped in five points off the bench.

As a team, Wayland controlled the glass with a 45-39 rebounding advantage, including 13 offensive rebounds that led to 11 second-chance points. The Queens also totaled 13 assists on 17 made field goals, showcasing their willingness to share the basketball.

Despite the outcome, the Flying Queens' effort was evident throughout, highlighted by a strong start, balanced scoring, and a determined presence on the boards. Thursday's game marked the final chapter of the season for Wayland Baptist, as the senior class and returning core close out another year representing the storied Flying Queens program with pride.
