PLAINVIEW --- The Wayland Baptist Flying Queens suffered a tough heartbreaking loss to
RV Langston, 60-53, on Monday night inside the Hutcherson Center.
Wayland came out sharp on both ends of the floor, setting the tone early with strong ball movement and defensive pressure. The Flying Queens jumped out to an 18–7 lead after the first quarter, fueled by hot shooting from beyond the arc and aggressive play in the paint. Wayland continued that momentum into the second quarter, outscoring Langston 21–18 to take a 39–25 advantage into halftime.
Freshman guard
Cania Mitchell paced Wayland with a game-high 22 points, attacking the lane and converting at the free-throw line.
Jadyn Trusler added 14 points, knocking down four three-pointers and providing a spark offensively throughout the night.
Brooklyn Birkenfeld controlled the glass with seven rebounds, while Wayland won the rebounding battle overall, 34–28.
Langston responded after the break, tightening defensively and holding Wayland to seven points in each of the final two quarters. Despite the shift in momentum, the Flying Queens continued to compete, trimming the deficit to one late in the third quarter and again making key defensive stops down the stretch.
Wayland showed resilience in the fourth, creating transition opportunities and earning trips to the free-throw line, but Langston capitalized on turnovers and late-game execution to seal the outcome.
The Flying Queens finished the night shooting 44.4 percent from three-point range and 83.3 percent at the free-throw line, underscoring their efficiency despite the final result. Unfortunately, the Queens finished the game with 24 turnovers with most of those coming in the second half.
The Queens will look to bounce back on the road this Thursday, February 12
th, when they travel to Oklahoma City for a battle against the Stars of Oklahoma City University. The game is scheduled to begin at 6:00 PM.
