PLAINVIEW --- The Wayland Baptist Pioneers delivered a thrilling walk-off victory Saturday afternoon, defeating Science & Arts, 9-8, securing the three-game sweep of the Drovers.
Wayland Baptist (21-11) showed resilience throughout the game, overcoming a mid-game deficit before sealing the win in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the ninth.
The Pioneers wasted no time getting on the board, erupting for four runs in the first inning. An early error by the Drovers opened the door, and timely hitting from
Adonis Bernal and
Arcadio Martinez quickly gave Wayland a 4-1 advantage. The Pioneers added another run in the second to extend the lead to 5-1.
USAO responded in the third inning with a five-run surge to briefly take a 6-5 lead, but Wayland Baptist remained composed. The Pioneers tied the game in the fifth inning before taking a 7-6 advantage on an RBI single from Martinez and a run-scoring groundout by
Rafaeleduardo Garcia.
On the mound, the Pioneers used a combination of arms to navigate a high-powered USAO lineup.
Antonio Mejia delivered a crucial performance out of the bullpen, tossing four shutout innings while striking out seven to stabilize the game.
The Drovers managed to even the score at 7-7 in the eighth inning and then took an 8-7 lead in the top of the ninth on a solo home run, putting pressure on the Pioneers heading into their final at-bat.
Wayland Baptist answered when it mattered most.
In the bottom of the ninth,
Sebastian Bravo sparked the rally with a base hit before Bernal stepped to the plate and delivered the decisive blow—a two-run walk-off home run to left-center field—securing the 9-8 victory for the Pioneers.
Bernal led the offensive charge, going 3-for-5 with four RBIs, including the game-winning homer. Bravo also had a standout day, finishing 3-for-5 with three runs scored, while Martinez added two hits and three RBIs.
Garrett Moseley earned the win on the mound after closing out the final inning for Wayland Baptist.
As a team, the Pioneers tallied 11 hits and showcased their ability to respond in key moments, ultimately capitalizing on late-game opportunities to secure the victory.
The Pioneers will look to build on this momentum when they host University of the Southwest (N.M.) for a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 24
th at Wilder Field. Game One of the doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 2:00 PM.
