Bats Come Alive to Erase 6-Run Deficit, Pioneers Run-Rule OPSU to Complete Sweep

PLAINVIEW -- After falling behind early, the Wayland Baptist Pioneers responded in emphatic fashion Saturday afternoon, erupting for 17 unanswered runs to defeat Oklahoma Panhandle State, 19-8, at home.

The Pioneers improved to 26-11 on the season with the victory, using a relentless offensive attack and dominant relief pitching to turn a deficit into a runaway win.
Wayland Baptist found itself in an early hole after OPSU plated three runs in the first inning and added two more in the third to take a 5-2 lead. The Aggies extended that advantage to 8-2 in the fourth, putting the Pioneers on their heels.

But from that point on, it was all Wayland.

The turning point came in the bottom of the fourth inning, when the Pioneers exploded for eight runs on five hits. Cesar Ibarra delivered a key two-RBI single, while Edgard Bermudez crushed a two-run homer to cap the inning. Adonis Bernal followed with a solo shot, and just like that, Wayland Baptist had surged ahead 10-8.

The momentum didn't stop there.

Wayland added five more runs in the fifth inning, taking advantage of defensive miscues and timely hitting. Arcadio Martinez drove in a run with a double, while Ibarra and Bernal continued to produce at the plate as the lead ballooned.

The Pioneers tacked on four additional runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach, highlighted by a two-RBI single from Bermudez and a sacrifice fly from Christian Toledo.

Offensively, Wayland Baptist was powered by a balanced effort up and down the lineup. Ibarra finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs, while Bermudez drove in a team-high four runs, including his home run. Bernal added three hits and two RBIs, also going deep, and Martinez contributed three runs and two RBIs.

The Pioneers tallied 14 hits and drew seven walks, consistently applying pressure throughout the middle innings.

On the mound, Collin Arnold earned the win in relief, improving to 4-0 on the season. Arnold was outstanding, tossing 3.1 scoreless innings while allowing just two hits and striking out four to shut down the OPSU offense the rest of the way.

After a challenging start, the Pioneers showcased their resilience and offensive firepower, turning an early deficit into one of their most dominant performances of the season.

Wayland Baptist will look to carry their momentum into a home non-conference doubleheader against Arlington Baptist University on Monday, March 30th. Game One is scheduled to begin at 11:00 AM.
