PLAINVIEW -- Despite an early breakthrough and a strong start on the mound, the Wayland Baptist Pioneers were unable to hold off a late surge from Southwestern Christian, falling 4-2 on Friday afternoon at home on Senior Day.
Wayland Baptist (27-16) struck first in what quickly turned into a tightly contested pitcher's duel. After three scoreless innings on both sides, the Pioneers broke through in the bottom of the fourth.
Edgard Bermudez sparked the offense with a single and aggressive baserunning, eventually coming around to score on an RBI triple from
Adonis Bernal. Moments later,
Arcadio Martinez lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, extending the lead to 2-0.
That early momentum was backed by a strong outing from starter
Tate House, who kept the Eagles off balance through much of his 6.2 innings of work. House allowed just four hits and struck out eight, working out of multiple jams to preserve the Pioneers' lead into the middle innings.
Southwestern Christian (22-24) responded in the fifth inning, cutting the deficit in half with an RBI single. The game remained 2-1 until the seventh, when the visitors capitalized on a key defensive miscue and timely hitting to take control. A bases-loaded walk tied the game before a two-out RBI single pushed Southwestern Christian ahead 3-2.
Wayland Baptist threatened to answer in the bottom half of the seventh.
Christian Toledo delivered a leadoff double to ignite the inning, and
Rafaeleduardo Garcia later added a single to put the tying run within reach. However, the Pioneers were unable to convert, leaving runners stranded as the opportunity slipped away.
Southwestern Christian added an insurance run in the ninth on a solo home run, extending the lead to 4-2.
In the final frame, Wayland Baptist mounted one last push. Bernal worked a leadoff walk and advanced to third later in the inning, but the Pioneers could not bring him home as the Eagles closed the door to secure the win.
Offensively, Garcia led the Pioneers with two hits, while Bernal drove in a run and reached base twice. Bermudez also contributed with a hit and two stolen bases, helping set the tone early.
The Pioneers will look to bounce back in their final two home regular season games of the year as they host a non-conference doubleheader against Arlington Baptist on Monday, April 13
th. Game One is set to begin at 12:00 PM at Wilder Field.
