LUBBOCK, Texas – Wayland Baptist University women's soccer battled throughout 90 minutes against NCAA Division II Lubbock Christian University on Sunday night, but the Pioneers fell 3-1 to the Chaps at the LCU Soccer & Track Complex.

Lubbock Christian took a 1-0 lead just 5:19 into the match when Mia Chambliss found the back of the net. The Pioneers entered halftime trailing by one despite holding LCU to just seven first-half shots.

Wayland continued to battle in the second half, but Lubbock Christian extended its advantage in the 57th minute when Kenzie Tosch scored off assists from Araceli Patterson and Journey Curs, making it 2-0.

The Pioneers continued to pressure the LCU defense and eventually broke through in the 82nd minute. Ashley Perez put Wayland on the scoreboard, cutting the deficit to 2-1 and giving the Pioneers momentum late in the match.

Wayland nearly found another breakthrough in the final minutes, but LCU goalkeeper Dylan Smith made several key saves to preserve the Chaps' advantage.

Lubbock Christian added an insurance goal with just two seconds remaining in regulation when Kaslee Roskelley scored off an assist from Logan Holloway, securing the 3-1 victory.

Wayland finished the match with 10 shots, putting seven on goal, while Lubbock Christian recorded 20 shots with nine on target. Both teams finished with six saves.

Perez led the Pioneers offensively with two shots on goal and Wayland's lone goal. Alexia Fregoso also provided an offensive spark, recording a team-high four shots, all of which were on target. Erin Carr added two shots, while Tannia Diaz and Aniyah Perez each recorded one shot on goal.

Maria Tomas played all 90 minutes in goal for the Pioneers, making six saves on nine LCU shots on target.

With the loss, Wayland Baptist falls to 0-2-0 on the season.

The Pioneers return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 2, when they travel to Odessa, Texas, to take on the University of Texas Permian Basin. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
