PLAINVIEW, Texas – The Wayland Baptist University men's soccer team created opportunities throughout the second half Saturday afternoon, but the Pioneers were unable to find the equalizer in a 1-0 loss to NCAA Division II Adams State University at J.V. Hilliard Field.

After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, Adams State broke through in the 52nd minute when Idress Altaee scored off an assist from Angel Avila Sandoval. The goal proved to be the difference despite Wayland applying significant pressure over the remainder of the match.

Wayland's best statistical advantage came from its ability to generate set-piece opportunities. The Pioneers finished with a 12-3 advantage in corner kicks, including a 10-2 edge in the second half. Wayland also put six of its seven shots on goal, compared with three shots on target from Adams State.

The Pioneers produced the first shot on goal of the afternoon when Maximiliano Campos tested Adams State goalkeeper Bryan Amezcua in the 16th minute. The two sides entered halftime scoreless, with Adams State holding a 4-2 advantage in total shots.

Wayland came out aggressively after the break, earning three corner kicks within the first six minutes of the second half. Adams State capitalized on its opportunity shortly afterward, however, as Altaee scored at the 51:33 mark to put the Grizzlies ahead 1-0.

The Pioneers continued to push for an equalizer. Evan Schumacher put an attempt on frame in the 55th minute before Ian Franchini forced another save less than three minutes later. Baptiste Hervaud and Felipe Dos Santos followed with shots on goal in the 64th and 66th minutes, respectively, but Amezcua kept Wayland off the scoreboard.

Wayland was forced to play the final portion of the match with 10 men after Schumacher received a red card in the 75th minute. Despite playing a man down, the Pioneers continued searching for the tying goal. Matus Nemec generated one final opportunity with nine seconds remaining, but his shot was saved to preserve the 1-0 result for Adams State.

Six different Pioneers recorded a shot on goal in the match, with Campos, Hervaud, Dos Santos, Nemec, Schumacher and Franchini each testing the Adams State goalkeeper. Schumacher led Wayland with two total shots. Goalkeeper Benjamin Godard played all 90 minutes and recorded two saves.

Wayland finished the afternoon with seven shots, six on goal and 12 corner kicks, while Adams State totaled 10 shots, three on goal and three corners. Amezcua's six saves ultimately helped the Grizzlies withstand Wayland's second-half pressure and secure the shutout.

The Pioneers will look to bounce back when they travel to Keene, Texas, to face Southwestern Adventist University on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 8 p.m.
