Nigerian Nwanguzo shined as WBU trackster

Patrick Nwanguzo came to Wayland in 1984 from Nigeria, where he had been working at the Imo State Sports Council.  During his three years as a member of the Pioneer track and field team, Nwanguzo helped lead the Pioneers to three straight NAIA Indoor Championships and three straight NAIA Outdoor Runner-up finishes.  Individually, he won five national championships, was named as a NAIA All-American 11 times, and earned recognition as a NAIA Scholar Athlete.

In his first national track meet at the 1985 NAIA Indoor Championships, Nwanguzo was the runner-up in the 600 yard dash with a time of 1:10.89.  He was also a part of the Pioneer Mile Relay team, along with Devon Morris, Russell Mitchell, and Peter Scott, that set a meet record with a winning time of 3:16.55.  The WBU men won their first team national championship that year with 78 points, 22 more than second place Texas Southern.

Nwanguzo earned another All-American designation at the 1985 Outdoor Championships when he finished sixth in the 400 meter dash with a time of 47.26.  He and Morris, along with Dennis Moore and Moses Ugbisie combined to run a 3:06.84 to win the 4x400 meter relay.  Earlier in the season, Ugbisie, Mitchell, Nwanguzo and Morris established a new school record in the event with a time of 3:03.74, a record that was still standing 26 years later.  As a team, the Pioneers produced 76 points to finish second, their highest finish ever at a national outdoor meet.

The 1986 Wayland men wrapped up the indoor and outdoor seasons just the way they did the previous year.  The indoor team scored an all-time high of 125 points (a total that had yet to be surpassed at the indoor meet in 2011) to run away with the championship, while the outdoor squad put up 78 points to finish behind Azusa Pacific University once again.  Nwanguzo picked up his second indoor runner-up trophy in the 600 yards in a time of 1:11.95, and he and Moore, Morris and Scott repeated as national champions in the Mile Relay, crossing the finish line in 3:17.32.

At the 1986 NAIA Outdoor meet, the 4x400 relay team lost their chance to repeat, finishing just behind Central Arkansas with a time of 3:11.50.  Nwanguzo captured one other award at the meet when he was named to the 1986 NAIA Scholar Athlete team.

That elusive national championship plaque in the 600 yards finally became his in 1987 when Nwanguzo won the race in a time of 1:12.64.  He added yet another All-American designation when he ran a 50.19 in the 440 yard dash to place second, and the Mile Relay team was victorious for the third straight indoor meet.  This time, Nwanguzo and Morris combined with James Rolle and Dennis Alexander to run a 3:19.46 in winning the title, and the entire Wayland team put up 115 points to make it three banners in a row.

In the final championship meet of his Pioneer career, Nwanguzo and the rest of the 4x400 meter relay team ran a 3:13.20 to finish second to Prairie View A&M University.  The WBU men scored 82 points in the meet to once again finish behind only Azusa Pacific in the race for the championship banner.

Nwanguzo was awarded his Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education at Wayland in 1988.  He is currently CEO of Eagle Case Management LLC in Kansas City, Kansas.  He has two sons, Ricky and Joshua, and enjoys photography, travel and listening to the news.
