Andrews life-long supporter, advocate of WBU athletics
Danny Andrews has been a fixture at Wayland Baptist athletic events for over three decades. A graduate of nearby Plainview High School, Andrews arrived at Wayland in 1967. He worked on the Wayland student newspaper, The Trailblazer, for three years, the last two as editor, broadcast basketball games for local radio stations, and covered Flying Queen and Pioneer games for the Plainview Daily Herald. He served as Wayland Sports Information Director for seven years, and covered three national AIAW tournaments as the sports editor of the Daily Herald.
In August 1978, Andrews was named editor of the Herald and although he no longer covers Wayland sports on a regular basis, he can still be found in the stands enjoying the games as a spectator and fan. Over the years, he has served as a public address announcer for home games, was the voice of Pioneer basketball on KKYN radio in 2000-01, hosted the “Todd Thurman Show” on local cable television in 2002-03, and helped raise funds for the Wilder Field lighting campaign.
He was in Knoxville, Tenn. at the 2003 National Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame induction ceremony for Claude Hutcherson, Marsha Sharp and Patsy Neal, and at the 2005 Texas Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony for Harley Redin.
Andrews, who graduated from Wayland in 1972 with a bachelor’s degree in history with minors in English and journalism, served on the Chamber of Commerce Sports Committee when the Plainview Queens Classic was founded, helped start the Panhandle Plains Boys All-Star Game which was held for three years in Hutcherson Center, and is a long-time publisher of the Panhandle-Plains Basketball Magazine which includes Flying Queens and Pioneer basketball information. He received a Special Achievement Award from the Panhandle Sports Hall of Fame, and in 1992 was presented the Distinguished Leadership Alumni Award from Wayland’s Association of Former Students, an organization for which he has also served as president.
The longest-tenured newspaper editor currently in the Hearst Corp. and Plainview’s Man of the Year in 1995, Andrews and his wife, Carolyn, have three children: Brandon of Tama, Fla.; Kayla of Carrollton; and Brad of Lubbock.
