Tom Hall
Tom Hall spent nearly two decades as the “Voice of Wayland Basketball,” providing play-by-play radio coverage during some of the most exciting years of both Flying Queen’s and Pioneer’s basketball.
A native of Plainview and a graduate of Plainview High School and West Texas State University, Hall began broadcasting Wayland basketball games in 1978.
Long-time friend and 2005-06 Athletic Hall of Honor inductee Danny Andrews says, “I take some credit for getting Tom into the radio business because, when we were in high school, he and I used to take a tape recorder to games and practice being broadcasters; I recommended him to Tut Tawwater, general manager at KVOP radio and longtime voice of the Bulldogs; and got Tom to come down from West Texas State University and help me broadcast Wayland games on KHBL – the Wayland radio station which probably had an audience of about 10 on game nights.”
Hall joined the Wayland staff full-time in 1981 as Director of Student Services and Director of Contractual Services. In 1984, when the Wayland Sports Network briefly expanded to include television as well as radio coverage, Hall also provided those broadcasts.
Some of the highlights of his career as Wayland’s man at the microphone include calling such games as the first Pioneer victory over then-arch rival Midwestern State in 1985, and the Pioneers 1985 overtime loss to Fort Hays State in the NAIA Championship game at Kemper Arena in Kansas City. On the women’s side, the 1977 playoff win over Stephen F. Austin in Tulsa and the comeback win in the national playoffs at Dillard University in Louisiana stand out.
As a member of the Plainview Chamber of Commerce Sports Committee, Hall served as co-director of the Queens Classic basketball tournament which was held at Hutcherson Center. He witnessed at least some part of every game played during the 29 years of the tournament’s existence.
Hall was named as Operations Director of KKYN Radio and host of the Morning Show in 1999. At the time of his induction, Plainview’s 2005 Man of the Year was known as the voice of Plainview High School’s Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs, providing play-by-play coverage of most PHS athletic events.
Among his hobbies, Hall lists coaching and golf. He is the long-time coach of the Plainview Lady Air summer basketball team, a position that keeps him busy from April to July. He and his wife, Linda, have one daughter, Jenny, a son-in-law, Randy, and two granddaughters, Mallory and Darby.
