Moeller dubbed 'best all-around player'

A transfer from Parsons College, Brenda Moeller made her debut with the Flying Queens under Coach Harley Redin in the 1972-73 season.  Moeller was a three time all-state selection from Wapsie Valley High in Fairbanks, Iowa, where she averaged 51 points a game as a senior.

Moeller made an immediate impact for the Queens, leading the team in scoring her first season with 261 points.  After that first season, Coach Dean Weese described Moeller as a good shooter and “…probably the best all-around player on the team.”

During Moeller’s time at Wayland, the Queens won two AAU and three NIT championships.  She earned both AAU and NWIT All-American honors all three years.  She was one of ten women named a 1974-75 preseason All-American by Street and Smith Basketball Yearbook and was named a 1975 Kodak All-American.   In the summer of 1973, Moeller traveled on a USA tour team and represented the United States in the World University Games, bringing home the silver medal.  By the end of her playing days, she had moved into the top ten in Wayland scoring, accumulating 1,023 career points.

The Flying Queens were an amazing 92-13 during Moeller’s three years, including 34-1 her senior season.  The team also reached a major milestone during her career, earning its 600th win in 1974 under the direction of Coach Weese, and at the time of her induction, the 1973-74 squad still holds the record for most wins in a season with 37.

Moeller, who graduated from Wayland cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics, remembers her three years as a member of the Flying Queens as “…being some of the best [years] of my life.”  After graduation, she went on to teach and coach basketball in her home state of Iowa and was inducted into the Iowa Girls Basketball Hall of Fame.  At the time of her Wayland Baptist Athletic Hall of Honor induction, she was a high school teacher in Minnesota.
