Barron never played in a losing game while in a Wayland uniform

Perfection is something seldom achieved, but Alice “Cookie” Barron and the Wayland Flying Queens of 1954-57 compiled one of the most remarkable records in sports history. Barron, a 5’4” guard from Georgetown, Texas, never played in a losing game as a Flying Queen, running Wayland’s win streak to 104 straight games and claiming national championships all three years. That win streak would continue to a national record 131 straight.
Barron was co-captain of the Flying Queens in 1956-57 and was named Wayland’s Outstanding Woman Athlete the same year. It was Barron’s free throw with four seconds left in the third overtime which prolonged the win streak in a 53-53 road win over Iowa Wesleyan, and she was a first team All-American as the Queens claimed a fourth straight Amateur Athletic Union national title later that year. She was also a member of the United States national team that beat Russia in the finals of the 1957 World Tournament, played before 35,00 spectators in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. At the time of her induction, that crowd was still the largest ever to watch a women’s basketball game.
Barron’s success continued into her professional career as an educator and athletics administrator. Upon her retirement in 1990 after 12 years as coordinator of athletics for Jefferson County School District, Colorado’s largest with 85,000 students, Barron had been recognized by numerous professional associations. She has also been inducted in to the Hall of Fame of the National Federation of State High Schools Association, Jefferson County Schools Athletic Directors Association, Colorado High School Coaches Association, Sportswomen of Colorado, Colorado high School Activities Association, and Colorado Coaches of Girls’ Sports.
Throughout her career, Barron has remained a supporter of Flying Queens basketball. Her efforts have contributed to the formation of the Flying Queens Alumni Association, which meets annually and provides support for the current team.
