Kurt Henry joined the Wayland Baptist track and field program as an assistant coach in October 2017. A native of Albuquerque, N.M., Coach Henry attended the University of New Mexico where he ran track (400, 800, 4x100, 4x400) for four years under his father, Matt, and uncle, Mark, who are twins. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in university studies with emphasis on physical education and communication in 2009, he coached at the high school level in New Mexico for six years. As an assistant, he and older brother Kenny won a state title at Cibola High School, and as a head coach at Albuquerque High his medley relay team won state for the school’s first individual title in more than 20 years. For 2½ years before joining Wayland, Coach Henry was a volunteer coach and interim assistant at Texas A&M University where another uncle, Pat, is head coach. He primarily coached sprinters and 400 hurdlers and coached all-American long jumper Will Williams. The Aggies won the NCAA indoor men’s national title before finishing as runner-up outdoors in 2017.
