A West Texas Native, Hunter grew up in Lubbock, Texas attending Monterey High School as a standout player. Upon graduating high school, Hunter went on to attend South Plains College and Eastern New Mexico University where she played at the JUCO and DII level.
She was recruited to start her collegiate career under current DI coach, Cayla Petree who was a top JUCO coach at the time. After leaving SPC, Hunter went on to play basketball at ENMU under current West Texas A&M Joshua Prock. Upon graduating with a Bachelor of Accounting, Hunter accepted her current role as Assistant Coach at Wayland. During her first two years, Hunter worked and completed her MBA in Accounting from Wayland Baptist University.
In her first three year’s as assistant, Hunter helped the Flying Queens to achieve:
- An average of 26 wins per year.
- 3 straight appearances to the Conference Tournament
- SAC Tournament Champions
- SAC Tournament Runners-Up
- Conference Champions
- 6 All-Americans
- 7 Flying Queen Records being broken
- 33 wins in a single season (Most wins in a season in the past 47 years)
- NAIA National Tournament Opening Round Champions
- 3 straight trips to the NAIA National Tournament
- Highest National Tournament winning percentage of any staff in the past 20 years
- Maintaining an overall team average of 3.6 GPA.
Chelsea Hunter will be going on her 4th season as the Assistant Coach here at Wayland and intends to help the Flying Queens reach greater heights.
