The Pioneer baseball team was denied what would have been their second-ever bid to the NAIA National Championships despite finishing third in the Sooner Athletic Conference behind the then-top two teams in the nation. Wayland finished its campaign 34-23 overall, including 14-8 in the SAC. Wayland had more wins than nine teams that made the 46-team field. Five WBU players – four of them underclassmen – were named to the All-SAC team, including outfielder Josh Alexander to the first team. Second-team picks for the Pioneers were sophomore catcher Ernesto Lizardi, junior designated hitter Gaby De La Cruz, shortstop Aaron Vallance, and sophomore utility fielder Will Bass.
