D.J., a freshman from Plainfield North High School in Illinois, was one of five WBU wrestlers to finish first at the Southwest Scuffle hosted by Richland College in Dallas.
Competing in the 165-pound weight class, D.J. won his first three matches by decision (8-7, 8-3, 5-1) then was awarded the title when his championship opponent forfeited.
“D.J. showed a lot of heart in all of his matches,” Wayland coach Chad Cook said. “He’s a hard worker and always shows good composure.”
