Women Lose in 2OT

A 2-1 double overtime loss to Howard Payne at Hilliard Field on Friday afternoon cost the Pioneer women's soccer team a chance to even up their record. Instead WBU dropped to 2-4 on the season with one more game left to play before conference action begins in just over two weeks.

The two teams scored within three minutes of each other midway through the first period to make it 1-1.  After Takenda Cotton put the Yellow Jackets on the board first, Stephanie Coronado took a pass from Jessica Hershon and put it in the back of the neck at the 32:12 mark.

WBU's sophomore defender Staci Long made two spectacular saves behind goalie Kylie Middleton in the latter stages of the first period to keep the game tied.

The score wasn't the only thing that was even in the first 45 minutes of the game.  HPU had just one more shot than the Pioneers, 11-10, but WBU came up with one more shot on goal, 5-4.

In the second period, the Wayland women had the offensive advantage, 10-4 in shots, but only two of their ten attempts made it to the Yellow Jacket goalkeeper.

The teams got three shots each in the first OT period.  With the possibility of a shootout looming, HPU's Leslie Jones took a pass from Alyssa Biere and put it just under the arms of the sprawling Middleton with 1:27 on the clock of the final OT.

The Wayland women get a week off before taking on Eastern New Mexico at Hilliard Field on Friday, Sept. 18 at 4 p.m.
