Wayland Women Put Up Good Battle

PLAINVIEW, Tex. --- A strong wind from the south helped to neutralize the speed of the Science & Arts of Oklahoma women during the first half of Friday afternoon's doubleheader soccer game at Hilliard Field. However, once the Drovers got the wind at their back, they took full advantage, scoring three unanswered goals in the second period for a 3-0 victory over the Pioneers of Wayland Baptist.

The Pioneers, who were wearing pink jerseys in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, held the Drovers scoreless in the first period. USAO had an 8-4 shot advantage, but both teams had just two shots on goal.

Five minutes into the second half, USAO's Gabby Martinez found the back of the net to break the scoreless tie. One minute later, Martinez assisted on Taylor Fain's goal to make it 2-0 lead, and then Martinez got her second goal and third point of the contest at the 61:13 mark to put the game away.

WBU, which put up a gutsy performance over the much deeper visiting squad, finished with seven shots in the game, led by Haley Hill with three. Seniors Jenee' Norris and Najuka Anderson each recorded a shot on goal, both in the opening period. Freshmen Corita Kraemer and Emarie Holland also got off shots for the Wayland women.

The Pioneers are now 2-14 overall and remain winless in Sooner Athletic Conference play. USAO improves to 9-6-1 overall and 5-5 in league action.
