Pioneers Fall in Overtime

PLAINVIEW, Texas - Southwestern Christian University outscored Wayland Baptist 13-7 in the five minute overtime period to come out with a 69-63 victory in men's basketball action on Tuesday afternoon at Hutcherson Center.

There were 12 lead changes and eight ties in the nonconference contest. WBU held a six point advantage with just under seven minutes remaining in regulation, but the visitors went on an 8-2 run over the next four and a half minutes to grab the lead.

A jumper by Rodrigo Silva in the paint put the Pioneers up 55-54 with a minute to go, and then C'Jamarion Leashore made it a two-point game when he hit one of two free throw attempts 13 seconds later.

The Eagles forced the OT when Josh Gamblin a pair of free throws with 20 seconds on the clock.

In overtime, Silva gave WBU the early advantage when he put back an offensive rebound. SCU answered with a three-pointer by Riemond Price just as the buzzer on the 35-second clock sounded. After a free throw by Silva tied it at 59, Josh Teague hit a lay-up after a steal by Desmond Jones to put the Pioneers up 61-59 with just under three minutes remaining.

That was the last field goal of the game for WBU, which fell to 5-6 on the season. Southwestern Christian, a relatively new member of the NAIA which is located in Bethany, Okla. improved to 3-8 overall.

Three Pioneers hit the double figure mark in scoring, led by Bobby Watkins with 19. Teague added 14, and Silva hit 10. Watkins was the team's leading rebounder with nine, and Leashore handed out a game-high seven assists.

The Eagle's Price led all players with 24 points, 13 rebounds and six assists.

SCU, which hit 41.5 percent from the field, made seven treys in the contest and went 18 of 23 from the charity stripe. The Wayland men won the battle of the boards, 37-36, and outscored their opponent 32-26 in the paint, but hit just 38.6 from the field and made just 15 of their 22 free throw attempts.

The Pioneers return to Sooner Athletic Conference play this weekend with two games in Shawnee, Okla. against St. Gregory's on Saturday and Oklahoma Baptist on Monday.
