PLAINVIEW, Tex. --- The Wayland Baptist men's soccer team put a goal in first at Hilliard Field on Monday evening, but the Greyhounds of Eastern New Mexico scored the next three, all within the space of a minute on the way to a 4-1 victory.
Cesar Vallin took a deflected shot and put it in the back of the net a little over seven minutes into the game to give the Pioneers an early 1-0 lead. It was Vallin's first goal of the season.
Just over three minutes later, ENMU scored the first of three straight when Jehmaine Brooks put in a rebound to tie the score. Five seconds later, Pablo Quintana netted his third goal of the season after taking a long pass from Kal Herbert.
Edgar Bear found Quintana in the open again 50 seconds after that and the Greyhounds had a 3-1 lead 11:32 into the contest.
The Pioneers had their chances to get back into the game. With almost 40 minutes gone in the first half, Mellado put a shot on goal that was blocked by ENMU net minder Chris Sheridan. Gerardo Espinoza grabbed the rebound forcing yet another save.
The game turned into a defensive struggle in the second half. The WBU defense, which was without the services of its standout freshman, Guillermo Villarreal who was injured in last Saturday's game at Howard Payne, held the Greyhounds to just six shots in the final 45 minutes. The Pioneers didn't fare much better offensively, however, getting only four shots off in the final period.
Aidan Mooney and John Piperis each did have a good opportunity to score late in the game, but one shot went just wide and the other was stopped by Sheridan.
WBU (2-2) on the season is off for the rest of the week. Coach Shiloh Posey's team will return to action on Monday, Sept. 20 when it faces the University of the Southwest at 7 pm at Hilliard Field.
