Pioneer Men Tie in Overtime Again

The Wayland Baptist and Oklahoma City men's soccer teams played 110 minutes on Saturday afternoon at Hilliard Field and the result was a 1-1 tie.  It was the third time this season that the Pioneers have played a double overtime game with a score of 1-1.

Neither team put a dent on the scoreboard in the first half, though there were 11 shots taken.  WBU's Saman Hassan finally found the back of the net six minutes into the second period after a pass from Jevaughn Vance.  It was only one of two shots taken by the Pioneers in the period.

The Stars' Ryan Hunter tied it up on an unassisted goal at the 78:44 mark.  OCU took six shots in the second half with three forcing saves by WBU freshman goalkeeper John-Ramses Thomas.

The visitors took two more shots in the first OT, but Thomas made the stop on both.  Each team had one shot on goal in the final ten minutes.

Jamath Shoffner, first-year coach of the Pioneers, said that he was happy with the physical effort of his team, "but we needed to finish off the game leading 1-0 with ten minutes to go. Now we have a week to rest and recover before we play again."

Before the game, Wayland honored its lone senior, Cody McClary of Amarillo.  "Cody played his heart out on Senior Day.  I only hope we are fortunate enough to play another home game for him this season."

The Pioneers are in fourth place in the Sooner Athletic Conference standings with a 4-3-1 record in league action.  They are a half game in back of Lubbock Christian and John Brown who are tied for second place.  WBU, 7-6-3 overall, has two games left in the regular season, both on the road at Oklahoma Christian and at Lubbock Christian.
