Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma City Stars scored with less than 3½ minutes remaining to defeat Wayland Baptist, 1-0, in Sooner Athletic Conference men's action here Saturday.
“We dominated the second half, we just couldn't score our chances,” Wayland coach
Jamath Shoffner said.
The loss drops the Pioneers to 9-3-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the conference while OCU improved to 7-4-3 and 2-3.
Both teams had several nice scoring chances, but neither converted until Trevor Harmon found the back of the net from close range in the 86
th minute. Harmon's shot caught WBU goalkeeper
John-Ramses Thomas diving left while he went right and came some 15 seconds after Thomas made a spectacular diving save.
Both teams got off 13 shots, three each on goal. After getting only two shots in the first half, the Pioneers managed 11 in the final 45 minutes.
Andres Lozano was credited with two of WBU's shots on goal while
Miguel Teos got the other.
Lamin Sawaneh ended with three shots while Lozano, Teos and Javier Perry managed two each.
Despite the setback, Shoffner came away pleased with how his team bounced back from its 3-2 overtime loss to Mid-America Christian on Thursday when the Pioneers fell after leading 2-0 at halftime.
“We gave way more of an honest effort today than the last game,” Shoffner said. “Our Achille's heel is finishing the chances we have. We create numerous chances every game and can't finish them.”
It was WBU's final regular-season road match as the Pioneers return home for their final two outings against No. 3 and unbeaten USAO at 3 p.m. Saturday then against Lubbock Christian at 7 p.m. Oct. 30.
“It's going to be tough. They're really physical and really deep,” Shoffner said of USAO. “But I think our guys will bounce back. I'm confident they'll be up to the challenge. We took them to overtime last year, so I think our guys will be ready.”
WBU wants to win to secure a higher seeding for the SAC Tournament.
“We'll keep plugging away,” Shoffner said. “We can't get frustrated.”
