Women’s soccer runs into stiff competition

Women's soccer coach Shiloh Posey discusses strategy with Katherine Teinert during a break in action at Saturday's match at Oklahoma City University.
Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY – Shiloh Posey gave credit where credit is due.

“They're the best team we've seen all year,” the Wayland Baptist women's soccer coach said after his Pioneers dropped a 3-0 Sooner Athletic Conference decision to No. 8 Oklahoma City University here Saturday afternoon.

Wayland (8-6-1 overall, 2-3-1 SAC) was outshot 29-2 during the match, further proof to Posey that OCU (13-1, 4-1) simply was the better team and had the better performance this day.

“They're technical, they're speedy, they're fast, they're big…What can you say?” Posey said. “There's a reason they're ranked No. 8 in the country.”

The Stars scored their first goal on a ball that drifted over the head of WBU keeper Courtney Chambers midway through the first half. That's how the teams went to the break.

But OCU came out firing in the second half, scoring twice within the first 2 minutes and 24 seconds. The first came after a deflection off of a defender, and the second was a shot by the Stars' Allie Glazner from deep on the left side.

“That was a great ball,” Posey said.

Neither of WBU's shots – by Jessica Bell and by Mary Achebo-Totty – were on goal, while OCU put 12 shots on goal. Chambers ended with nine saves. All of the Stars' three goals were unassisted.

“We didn't score any goals, but our girls did everything they could do,” Posey said of the Pioneers. “I'm proud of the way they played.”

Wayland has a week off before its final regular-season match at home Saturday against USAO, which stands No. 2 in the SAC. Posey feels the Pioneers have already secured a spot in the SAC Tournament; the top eight of the conference's nine teams qualify, and Wayland was No. 6 going into this weekend's action.

“We're looking forward to some time off so we can rest up a little bit,” said Posey, who hopes to have three of his team's four injured starters (Whitney Phillips, Haley Reiser and Emarie Holland) back before next weekend.
“We'll see what happens.”
