After battling to a 1-1 overtime tie against the No. 3-ranked team in the nation on Saturday, the Wayland Baptist men's soccer team had plenty of confidence going into their Tuesday night matchup here against Sooner Athletic Conference rival Lubbock Christian.  That confidence paid off as the Pioneers defeated the Chaparrals 1-0 in front of a loyal crowd of supporters from both universities at Wayland's J.V. Hilliard Field.

WBU forward Miguel Teos scored the match's lone goal at the 17:33 mark, dribbling through several defenders and taking a long range shot that found its way past LCU's goalie. From there, the Pioneers only had to maintain their lead and hold off a charging second-half push from the Chaps.

“In those first 20-25 minutes, we came out and set the tempo of the game,” head coach Jamath Shoffner said. “We had four or five clear chances to score but just couldn't put it in the back of net. Miguel had a great goal and it was a great individual effort. He's had numerous assists for us but that was his second goal of the season.

“Then in the second half, we came out strong for the first 10 to 15 minutes and had more chances to score, but we didn't. You have to give LCU credit…they never stopped and kept pushing. They actually had the better play during the last 30 minutes of the game. They kept fighting and put us on our heels.”

Wayland (10-4-2, 4-2-2 SAC) took 11 shots on the night – nine in the first half and two in the second – with four shots on goal. LCU (7-6-3, 3-4-1) took five shots, including three on goal, all coming in the second half. The teams were matched evenly with corner kicks, each taking three in the first half and two in the second.

With the win, the Pioneers will host a rematch with LCU in the first round of the SAC tournament at 6 p.m. Saturday at Hilliard Field.

“We know Saturday is going to be a totally different game because the loser goes home,” Shoffner said. “We know it's going to be really tough and I'm glad we're playing at home. Since we just played them, it could help us because we're familiar with them or it could hurt us because we're too familiar.

“When the conference tournament starts, everything goes out the window. And with LCU, we know it's going to be a battle.”
