Soccer women make history...sort of

Box Score SHAWNEE, Okla. – Two days after Wayland's men's soccer team did it, the Pioneer women's soccer squad set a program record for most wins in a season.
Well, kinda.
Jessica Bell, Whitney Phillips and Emarie Holland all scored goals as the Pioneers defeated winless St. Gregory's 3-1 on a chilly Saturday afternoon. It marked the seventh win for Wayland, officially matching the record for victories in a season set in 2008 when the team went 7-7-2. However, WBU coach Shiloh Posey pointed out that two of the '08 victories were credited after it was discovered that Southern Nazarene University used an ineligible player.
“So to me this is our best season,” Posey said.
It also marked Wayland's first win on St. Gregory's field, Posey noted.
Bell got the Pioneers (7-5 overall, 1-2 SAC), who were coming off a 3-0 loss to Oklahoma Baptist on Thursday, rolling early, scoring on a tap-in following a free kick by Zoe Benson from 35 yards out just 45 seconds into the action.
Phillips made it 2-0 when she scored on a distance shot with just under five minutes left in the first half.
Holland, who got an assist on Phillips' goal, pushed the lead to three when she scored her team-leading seventh goal on a dribble penetration about midway through the second half.
St. Greg's (0-10-1, 0-3) got on the board with about seven minutes remaining on a breakaway that Posey said caught WBU keeper Courtney Chambers “a littler high than she should have been,” and the Lady Cavaliers “played over her head.”
“It was a tough weather day, but the girls played through it and got the win,” Posey said.
With just five regular-season games remaining, Wayland next takes the field back at home at 5 p.m. Thursday against John Brown (6-3, 1-1), a 1-0 winner Saturday over USAO, followed by an 11 a.m. match Saturday against Rogers State (9-3, 1-2).
“We're looking forward to next Thursday,” Posey said.
