Flying Queens take down SAGU, 64-43

Box Score
WAXAHACHIE -- The Wayland Baptist Flying Queens spoiled Southwestern Assemblies of God University's Saturday night at their own tournament.
Freshman Laura Castillo hit five 3-pointers for 15 points and Angeleigh Davis added 14 as the Queens posted a convincing 64-43 victory over the Lady Lions in the final game of the SAGU Classic.
"Our kids did a nice job of turning around from last night's tough loss against a very good team (54-50 to No. 19 LSU-Shreveport)," Wayland coach Tory Bryant said. "They played extremely hard both halves. We've really been preaching consistent effort in both halves."
The win evened Wayland's record to 2-2 while the Lady Lions fell to 1-3. SAGU was coming off an 80-68 win on Friday over Dallas Christian. The Lady Lions' two previous losses were to USAO, 84-64, and Southwest Christian University, 63-45.
The Queens led 24-19 at halftime before their offense came together after intermission when Wayland hit 7-of-12 from long range. Castillo finished 5-of-10 from beyond the arc.
"We shot the ball a lot better in the second half tonight -- 40 percent, which was up from 24 percent in the first half," Bryant said. "They ran a lot of zone (defense), and our shots started falling in the second half. We also turned up the defensive pressure the second half, which (is easier to do) when you make some shots."
Jordan Scott-Benson and Christie Mooney had nine points each for Wayland whlie LaTericka Anderson added seven.
The Queens outrebounded the Lady Lions, 43-30, including 13 offensive boards. CeCe Williams, Mooney and Scott-Benson pulled down six rebounds each.
Wayland turned the ball over 19 times compared to SAGU's 27. The Queens were credited with 18 steals, including three each by Anderson and Mooney.
Bryant said the Queens will have to continue to lean on their defense while they fine-tune their offensive execution. Their next opportunity to do that comes at 6 p.m. Monday when they host Northern New Mexico College in Hutcherson Center.
