Texas Wesleyan hands Queens first loss

Box Score Wayland Baptist couldn't hold onto a two-point halftime lead as the Flying Queens suffered their first loss of the season to Texas Wesleyan University on Friday night in Hutcherson Center, 72-56.
 
The Queens (1-1), who won their season-opener on Thursday over Oklahoma-Panhandle State, 80-52, led the Lady Rams 33-31 at intermission. But Texas Wesleyan, which was making its season debut, outscored Wayland, 41-23, in the second half to win by 16 points.
 
Wayland outrebounded the Lady Rams 40-38 but turned the ball over 28 times, exactly twice as many as Texas Wesleyan. Most of the Flying Queens' giveaways came after intermission.
 
Angeleigh Davis was the only Flying Queen to reach double-figure scoring with 17 points. LaTericka Andereson came off the bench for her nine points, Rochelle Norris added eight, CeCe Williams seven, Jordan Scott-Benson six, Stephanie Afunugo four, Laura Castillo three and Aubrey Pedigo two.
 
Wayland hit 36 percent (5-of-14) of its three-point tries but missed a number of close-range shots and wound up shooting 34 percent (19-of-57) from the field overall. The Queens made 13-of-18 (72 percent) from the free-throw line.
 
The Lady Rams, who will join Wayland in the Sooner Athletic Conference next season, put four players in double figures, led by Takoia Larry's 17 and J'Tierra Brown's 15. Toeisha Cooper and Carneisha Sims added 11 each. TWU shot 48 percent (29-of-61) from the field, 27 percent (3-of-11) from long range and 61 percent (11-of-18) from the charity stripe.
 
Wayland next participates in the Southwestern Assemblies of God Classic in Waxahachie, taking on Louisiana State-Shreveport at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 9 then SAGU at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 10. The Flying Queens are back at home to host Northern New Mexico College at 6 p.m. Nov. 12.
