Box Score WAXAHACHIE – It's customary after every Wayland Baptist volleyball victory for Matt Driskill to play the song, "Another One Bites the Dust," on his web streaming broadcast.
Driskill has been able to cue the song almost like clockwork of late. Approximately 75 minutes after the Pioneers' first serve, count on hearing, "Another one gone and another one gone, another one bites the dust!"
It happened again shortly after noon on Saturday after the No. 21 Pioneers recorded yet another sweep, this time taking out Sooner Athletic Conference newcomer Southwestern Assemblies of God University, 25-18, 25-21, 25-20.
The win improved Wayland to 19-3 on the season and 5-1 in SAC play while SAGU fell to 10-9, 3-4.
As they have almost every time they've taken the floor over the past few weeks, the Pioneers dominated. The Lady Lions scored the first two points of the match, but Wayland scored the next five and was in control most of the rest of the match, winning the first set, 25-18.
The second set was tied at 20 when the Pioneers went on another nice run, scoring four unanswered points. Jacobsma ended it with a kill to cap the 25-21 final.
The Pioneers assumed a 5-1 lead in set three and strolled to the capping 25-20 win on a tip by
Chelsey Driskill.
Wayland coach
Jim Giacomazzi was full of compliments for his team and individual players after their 12
th win in 13 outings, including eight straight sweeps.
"
Claire Jacobsma had a wonderful match, one of the best she's ever had" Giacomazzi said of the senior right-side hitter from Midland. "She accounted for a bunch of points."
Jacobsma finished with a team-high 13 kills on 23 attempts, committing no errors for a .565 hitting percentage. She also had three block assists.
"The big challenge she's had is to be consistent and be healthy," Giacomazzi said of Jacobsma. "This year she hasn't been hurt. Her arm's in good shape, and she came in in good shape. Now she's reaping the benefits. It's her senior year, and she's going out with a bang."
Grecia Rivera turned in another solid performance with a team-high 15 digs along with a dozen kills and two errors to hit .313.
"Grecia had another good night," Giacomazzi said. "We're getting better on our defense all the time. I'm happy to see that."
Shahala Hawkins had nine kills and hit .421 and led the team in blocks with one solo and two block assists.
Mackenzie Clark also had nine kills and swung at a .350 clip.
Wayland hit .354 as a team, ending with 48 kills on 113 swings with only eight errors.
"That's two days in a row with great hitting percentages," Giacomazzi said. "Only eight hitting errors in three sets, that's remarkable, and not something we've always been known for."
Libero
Mercades Torres dug 12 balls while
Ashlyn Westerman had 44 assists and two aces.
The Pioneers return to Hutcherson Center next weekend for homecoming to take on St. Gregory's University at 7 p.m. Friday followed by John Brown University at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. SGU (5-14, 2-4) defeated Southwestern Christian on Saturday in three while JBU (8-14, 2-3) took on Mid-America Christian on Saturday. Results were not immediately available.
With those two matches, Wayland will wrap up the first half of SAC play.
