Box Score LANGSTON, Okla. – Turnovers and missed opportunities again haunted the Wayland Baptist football team as the Pioneers dropped a Central States Football League game here Saturday afternoon to the Langston Lions, 38-7.
The Pioneers (1-6 overall, 0-2 CSFL) fell behind 10-0 but pulled to within three points when quarterback
Anthony Campuzano and
Trey Rowe hooked up on a 30-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter. It was the 10th scoring toss of the season for Campuzano and the fourth TD catch for Rowe.
The score remained 10-7 until late in the second quarter when the Lions (4-3, 3-0) punched in their second touchdown. Wayland quickly responded, moving the ball into the red zone before an interception spoiled the threat, and Langston took a 17-7 lead into intermission.
While the Lions were able to put up three more TDs in the second half, Wayland wasn't able to fully find its groove. The Pioneers did mount a couple more scoring threats, one that was thwarted by an interception and another that ended on downs at the Langston 1-yard line late in the contest.
Wayland threw four interceptions – three by Campuzano and one by
Payson Bain – while the Pioneers took the ball away three times: an interception by
David Hockenberry and two fumble recoveries.
WBU had four more first downs than Langston, 28-24, although the Lions – thanks to several long plays – held a substantial edge in total yards, 476-245. The Pioneers ran for 146 yards and passed for 99, while the Lions passed for 263 yards and four touchdowns while rushing for 213 yards and one score.
"We moved the ball some, and our defense played well against the run," Wayland coach
Butch Henderson said. "But we turned the ball over too many times and gave up some big plays. We have to learn how not to do those things."
Wayland plays the fourth game in its five-game road swing next Saturday when it returns to Oklahoma to take on Bacone in Muskogee at 2 p.m. Bacone (3-3, 1-0) played at Oklahoma Panhandle State on Saturday.
