Box Score HOBBS, N.M. – In their first game of the season, the Wayland Baptist Flying Queens traveled to Hobbs, N.M. to take on the University of the Southwest Lady Mustangs. The Queens won big, 90-57, but it took a strong second half to get the convincing win.
"We started out real slow tonight and didn't play like we knew we could in the first half," head coach
Alesha Robertson-Ellis said. "They had all guards and played a five-out, and teams like that scare me. They were just nailing three pointers in the first half, and when you aren't mentally ready you can lose to any team on any given night."
Wayland (1-0) led the Lady Mustangs (0-3) by just five points at the half, 37-32, but was able to turn it around in the second half.
"In the second half we came out and played a lot better," Robertson-Ellis said. "As a team, we just stepped our game up. We were more intense (in the second half) and ran our offense better.
"We started knocking down shots and went on a pretty good run, and all of the sudden we were up by 20 points."
Robertson-Ellis said that the key for the Queens in the second half was that they got back to their game plan and started pushing the ball a lot better.
"We kind of got away from our game plan in the first half, but we pushed a lot better in the second half and that's when we play our best."
The Queens travel to Atchison, Kan. to compete in the AmericInn BC Classic on Nov. 7 and 8. Wayland plays No. 16 MidAmerica Nazarene at 5:30 on Nov. 7 before taking on tournament host, Benedictine, at 3 p.m. Nov. 8.
