Flying Queens keep gaining respect

The Wayland Baptist Flying Queens continue to gain respect in the NAIA Division I Women's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 poll. After earning six votes and four votes in the previous two polls, the Flying Queens this week garnered 43 points, the equivalent of 28th in the nation. The Queens were the equivalent of 31st in both previous polls.

The Flying Queens (13-10, 10-4 Sooner Athletic Conference) have not been ranked in the Top 25 since 2009-10.

Other Sooner Athletic Conference teams mentioned in the poll are Oklahoma Baptist, which fell one spot from No. 4 after falling to Wayland last week, No. 6 Oklahoma City and No. 16 John Brown.

The Queens play only one of those teams in their remaining six regular-season games, that coming at 1 p.m. Saturday against OCU. The Stars were No. 2 when they defeated Wayland in Oklahoma City early last month in their SAC opener, 78-68. The Queens host Southwestern Christian (8-15, 6-9) at 6 p.m. Thursday. Wayland previously defeated the Lady Eagles, 83-61.

The Pioneers (16-8, 7-7) also play only one ranked team in their remaining six games: No. 5 Southwestern Assemblies of God on the road next week. Other SAC teams getting Top 25 votes are No. 14 Mid-America Christian, No. 21 St. Gregory's and Oklahoma City, which is the equivalent of No. 27th. The Pioneers host the Stars at 3 p.m. Saturday after entertaining Southwestern Christian at 8 p.m. Thursday. On the road in the first half of SAC play, Wayland defeated the Eagles, 83-62, but lost to the Stars, 85-75.
